About me

am a Consultant Ophthalmologist based at University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust since 2017, with an interest in the vitreoretinal disorders (posterior segment) of the eye and cataract surgery.

I qualified in medicine in 2001 from B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, in India and went on to complete a master’s degree in ophthalmology from the same institute gaining a Gold Medal and went on to gain a higher research degree (DM) from Cranfield University, UK. I studied ethnic variation in diabetic retinopathy in London. In 2015 I completed my specialist ophthalmology training in the U.L. with a South West Peninsular Deanery. Subsequently, I went on to undertake two years of sub-specialty training in vitreoretinal disorder at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and University Hospital Southampton.

I specialise in treating patients with vitreoretinal disorders, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. I have sub-specialised in treatments of retinal conditions like retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and vitreous floaters.

To date I have performed more than 18000 cataract surgeries and close to 2000 vitrectomies.

I am involved in charitable work. I support two charity organisations Khmer Sight, Cambodia and BKL Walawalkar Charitable Trust, India, where I teach and perform cataract surgery. I am trying to set up diabetic screening services at these sites.

I have keen interest in research with more then 60 peer reviewed publications.
I am principal investigator for NIHR trial : EVIAN looking at role of Early Vitrectomy in management of Endophthalmitis
