About me

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (Birmingham) and an honorary consultant at The Robert Jones and Agnus Hunt Hospital (Oswestry), 2 of only 5 purely Orthopaedic Hospitals in the country. I graduated from Edinburgh University and undertook my Registrar training in the Manchester region. After completion of my training, I spent 18 months on fellowship in North America. I spent 12 months in Halifax, Nova Scotia, undertaking a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Sports Medicine Clinic of Nova Scotia. I subsequently spent 6 months at the Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre in Toronto, gaining further experience in Shoulder and Knee surgery.

In 2008 I was awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society North American traveling fellowship. This enabled me to spend a further 4 weeks visiting some of the world's foremost shoulder surgeons in major centres such as New York, Los Angeles, San Antonio and Houston. In 2018 he was awarded the European Society of Sports Traumatology Knee surgery and Arthroscopy APKASS travelling fellowship visiting centres in Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand.

I am Professor of Regenerative Medicine at Keele University and an Honorary Professor of Chemical engineering at Birmingham University where I supervise PhD students investigating the use of stem cells in cartilage repair, tendon regeneration and biological markers of joint injury. I have over 70 scientific publications in various international medical journals and have written 6 book chapters on knee and shoulder injuries. I have presented over 100 papers and regularly teach other Surgeons as a faculty member at various national and International meetings. My current research grant awards are in excess of 3M. In recognition of my expertise and research contribution to the literature on joint preservation I am a member of 2 prestigious invitation only societies; the ACL study group and the Magellan society.

In 2006 I completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. I have since designed my own fixation device for use in ACL reconstruction, which is currently in use world-wide.

My interests include all aspects of shoulder surgery, in particular, arthroscopic procedures such as rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilizations, capsular release for frozen shoulder and ACJ injuries. I also perform total and reverse shoulder replacement for arthritis of the shoulder.

I have a major interest in sporting injuries of the knee, including anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair and patella dislocation.

I have particular expertise in cartilage repair in the knee and I am a committee member of the International Cartilage Regeneration and joint preservation Society. I treat all aspects of cartilage injury using the full spectrum of cartilage regeneration techniques and cell therapies. I perform all associated reconstructive surgeries including Meniscal transplant and Osteotomy in an attempt to preserve the knee joint.
