About me
Mr Richard Baker offers a general surgical and coloproctology service. His particular area of expertise is in bowel problems. His main areas of interest are advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques in the treatment of colonic and rectal (bowel) cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as specialist disease of the anus and anal canal including haemorrhoids (piles), fissures and fistula.
He also offers a comprehensive approach to the management of abdominal and groin hernias, mainly using laparoscopic techniques.
Mr Baker did his undergraduate studies at the University of Leeds Medical School and completed his basic surgical training in Hull. Mr Baker did his higher surgical training in the Yorkshire region as well as a senior fellowship at the world renowned specialist centre for coloproctology St Marks Hospital in London.
Currently Mr Baker is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon and the Clinical Director of the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery clinical service unit at Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.
Before taking up the Clinical Director role he was the lead clinician for the Leeds bowel cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) and the Lead Clinician for the John Goligher Colorectal unit. The Leeds MDT has one of the highest volumes of cancer work in the county and Mr Baker has performed over 400 cancer resections with excellent results (See NBOCAP audit data).
He is the lead surgeon in the treatment of Squamous cell carcinoma of the Anus for the Yorkshire region. He also runs the Bowel cancer screening programme in Leeds and is one of only a handful of surgeons in the country who is a screening accredited colonoscopist
