About me
Mr Stephen Jones is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Cardiff, practising at Nuffield Health Cardiff Hospitals and within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. In over 20 years of consultant practice he has gained extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of hip conditions and is recognised as a key opinion leader in primary and revision hip replacement surgery.
His 2025 National Joint Registry report shows that in the past 5 years Mr Jones has performed 870 primary hip replacements, with only two cases requiring revision (0.2%) and 100% data submission compliance. The overall rate of major complications during this period was 0.8%, with both very low complication and revision rates, reflecting his commitment to safe, high-quality care and excellent outcomes for his patients.
Mr Jones qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1995 and completed his specialist orthopaedic training in Wales. He has further enhanced his expertise through fellowships and clinical visits in the UK, Europe, and North America. In addition to his clinical work, he holds an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering and is actively involved in the development and evaluation of hip implants.
He has held several senior leadership roles, including serving as President of the British Hip Society, and is an active member of the International Hip Society. Nationally, he has contributed as the Musculoskeletal Research Lead for Wales. Mr Jones has been a co-applicant on research funding exceeding �4.5 million and a co-investigator in multiple UK multicentre studies. His research portfolio spans both clinical outcomes and translational science in hip surgery.
He is widely recognised both nationally and internationally for his expertise in hip surgery, Mr Jones is regularly invited to speak at leading medical conferences around the world. He has presented extensively across the UK, Europe, North America, South Africa and Asia, and regularly participates in surgical demonstrations and Bioskills training programmes worldwide. He also holds several Honorary Fellowships and Visiting Professorships. A committed educator, Mr Jones is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training. He teaches on courses delivered by universities and the Royal College of Surgeons and serves as both an internal and external examiner for medical students.
