About me

Professor Parwez Hossain is one of the UK's leading ophthalmologists in Southampton and Winchester. He is a Professor of Ophthalmology (Cornea, Cataract & Ocular Surface Diseases) at the University of Southampton.

He is an expert in treating ocular surface diseases (Dry Eyes, Blepharitis, Pterygium), corneal transplantation(including DSEK & DMEK surgery), corneal infections & cataracts. He is especially interested in finding new approaches to managing corneal diseases, which is the current area of his research activity.

He is Chair of the Ocular Advisory Group at NHS Blood & Transplant, leading the advice on corneal transplantation for the UK. He is widely published in peer-reviewed journals, has authored several books and is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton.

Professor Hossain qualified in medicine from the University of Aberdeen and trained in ophthalmology in Aberdeen, Nottingham, Leicester and Miami, USA. In 2001, Professor Hossain gained his PhD in ocular immunology and biomedical physics. His thesis focused on a new method for in vivo tracking of immune cells in the eye. This interest continued into his time as a clinical lecturer at Nottingham University, where he continued his research and applied to improve ways of diagnosing and treating corneal inflammation and infection.

Professor Hossain has been at the University of Southampton and Southampton General Hospital for 19 years. Here he has established one of the UK's leading corneal transplant & research centres and pioneered work on imaging of cornea infections, surgical techniques to reduce corneal vascularisation and improving surgical procedures for corneal endothelial diseases. In 2011 he wrote an influential article on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' surgical technique article on Pterygium surgery. His surgical practice includes a low scar tissue glue-based system for pterygium surgery.

As well as running a successful research programme in corneal infection, Prof Hossain has vast experience in keratitis management. Infections of the cornea from bacteria, acanthamoeba, fungi and viruses such as herpes. He uses the latest techniques/therapies to improve the diagnosis and treatment.

Professor Hossain also has expertise in managing cataracts, especially in corneal conditions such as astigmatism, pterygium, and Fuchs Dystrophy. In his cataract surgical practice, he has vast experience using extended depth of field intraocular lenses & toric intraocular lenses to achieve a premium visual outcome. He has introduced the new technology of continuous focus lens implants to the UK (Ophtec Presbyopic NVA Lens Implant) with high patient outcome scores, the outcomes presented at the European Society for Cataract & Refractive Surgeons Meeting, Milan 2022.

Professor Hossain has received several awards and grants, including funding from the Medical Research Council, the British Council for the Prevention of Blindness, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Wellcome Trust. Last year, in 2018, Professor Hossain was awarded the King James IV Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in recognition of his work on corneal diseases and surgery. He holds an N1 national award for his NHS services. He is also the associate editor of 'Eye', a scientific journal for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
