About me
Dr Justin Mencel is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden Hospital, specialising in gastrointestinal cancers and acute oncology. He treats a broad range of GI malignancies including oesophagogastric, hepatobiliary/hepatocellular, pancreatic, colorectal, small bowel, anal cancers, neuroendocrine tumours, and cancers of unknown primary.
Dr Mencel completed his medical degree at the University of Adelaide, followed by medical oncology specialist training at the Royal Adelaide, Queen Elizabeth, and Royal Darwin Hospitals. He completed his MDRes at The Royal Marsden and Institute of Cancer Research, focusing on the clinical application of circulating tumour DNA in GI cancers.
Dr Mencel is actively involved in research across the spectrum of GI oncology, with a particular focus on clinical trials. He is the principal investigator on several GI cancer studies, including molecularly targeted early to late phase trials. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). He is a co-applicant on major grant-funded trials at The Royal Marsden Hospital and sits on the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre Immunotherapeutics and Early Phase Drug Development Theme working groups. His contributions extend to national and international guideline development, peer review for leading oncology journals, and public engagement via charity collaborations with AMMF and Pancreatic Cancer UK. He has presented at major international conferences including ASCO and ESMO and has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications across GI oncology, immunotherapy, and ctDNA.
