About me
Karl Gaffney has been a Consultant Rheumatologist at Spire Norwich Hospital and The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 1996. He is also Rheumatology Research lead, Honorary Professor at Norwich Medical School, Chief Medical Advisor and Trustee of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (www.nass.co.uk) and Treasurer, Trustee and Vice-Chairman of the British Society for Spondyloarthritis (www.britspa.co.uk). He represents the British Society for Rheumatology at appraisals of biological therapies in axial SpA (including Ankylosing Spondylitis) and is chair of the British Society for Rheumatology Guidelines Group for biologics in axial SpA. He is an Associate Editor of "Rheumatology" and Vice-Chair of the Heberden Committee at the British Society for Rheumatology. As well as providing high quality medical care, Prof Gaffney works as part of a highly experienced multidisciplinary team which includes musculoskeletal radiologists, neurophysiologists, specialist physiotherapists, nurse specialists and occupational therapists. He works closely with expert orthopaedic surgery colleagues and experts in other areas allied to rheumatology.
He provides a full range of rheumatology services including intra-articular (joint) and soft-tissue injections, epidural injections, intra-venous therapies, immunosuppressive treatments, disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and the new range of biologic therapies. He has on-site access to all specialist laboratory and imaging modalities including MRI, CT, ultrasound and DEXA (Bone Densitometry).
Professor Gaffney has particular expertise and research interest in the management of ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.
