About me
Mr Stellakis has been a consultant surgeon specialising in diseases of the bowel and the abdominal wall for over 17 years. He has a vast experience in laparoscopic (keyhole) and endoscopic surgery and is one of only 57 Consultant Surgeons in the UK who made up part of the national training programme (LAPCO) allowed to train other consultants in advanced keyhole techniques for removing bowel cancers. Mr Stellakis set up from scratch the keyhole bowel cancer service at Warwick hospital, lead the implementation of the state of the art operating suite and pioneered these surgical techniques in the Midlands. He has trained numerous fellows, junior surgeons and consultants. He also treats benign diseases of the bowel including irritable bowel syndrome.
He trained predominantly in London but also at various international institutes of excellence including Strasbourg and Paris. He completed a fellowship in laparoscopic bowel surgery at Frimley Park Hospital in 2004 prior to taking up his consultant post. He is a skilled diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopist who is audited on a 6 monthly basis. His comfort and patient satisfaction scores are excellent.
Mr Stellakis has a specific interest in keyhole repair of hernias, colonoscopies and sports groin injuries. He has developed the Warwickshire Hernia Centre that specialises in all types of abdominal hernia surgery including recurrent and complex hernias. He is one of the few UK surgeons who has performed over 2500 TEP laparoscopic hernia repairs with excellent audited results.
This technique, whilst more complex to perform than other keyhole or open repairs, affords the patient less pain and scarring and quicker recovery whilst being safer than other techniques. Overall Mr Stellakis has completed over 8000 laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
Mr Stellakis was until recently Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital for over 8 years and is lead for endoscopy. He has lead the endoscopy unit during its successful campaign to gain national accreditation (JAG). Nuffield Health Warwickshire was one of the first private hospitals to have achieved this. He continues to be lead for the endoscopy unit.
