About me

Mr Vanhegan is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip surgery, with expertise in joint replacement, hip preservation, and orthopaedic trauma. He is passionate about improving patient outcomes and has a strong track record in same-day discharge following hip replacement, a focus of his clinical practice.

With extensive experience in both pre-clinical and clinical research, Mr Vanhegan's academic background informs his evidence-based approach to surgery. His specialist interest lies in hip implant design, having completed both a First-Class BSc and an MD(Res) from University College London on this subject. His research has earned multiple national and international awards, including the WJ Little Medal from the Seddon Society.

Educated and trained in London, Mr Vanhegan completed his higher surgical training through the North-West Thames (Imperial College) rotation. After obtaining his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2018, he completed three UK-based fellowships in Oxford, Reading, and at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. These fellowships focused on:

Primary and revision joint replacement

Hip preservation surgery for younger patients

Complex and re-do hip surgery

He was also awarded the prestigious British Hip Society Fellowship, enabling international training in Chicago and Vancouver, where he gained further insight into high-volume joint replacement surgery.

In his NHS role, Mr Vanhegan treats a wide range of hip and knee conditions including:

Total hip and knee replacement

Revision (re-do) surgery

Hip preservation procedures

Orthopaedic infections and trauma

He leads his hospital's Hip Fracture Service, recognised nationally for its high quality of care. His experience managing complex infections is supported by membership in a regional Bone Infection Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and the European Bone & Joint Infection Society (EBJIS).

Mr Vanhegan regularly provides expert medico-legal reports for clinical negligence and personal injury claims. He has courtroom experience as an expert witness and is trusted by solicitors for his clear, detailed, and unbiased assessments.

He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and acts as a reviewer for high-impact orthopaedic journals. As Principal Investigator, he led a randomised controlled trial and helped establish a clinical research unit with full ethical approval.

Mr Vanhegan is a Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons, responsible for training oversight within the Wessex Deanery. He sits on training committees, participates in ARCP reviews, and supports the professional development of junior doctors.

A former international rower and competitive cyclist, Mr Vanhegan has a strong interest in managing sports-related hip injuries. He worked with the International Olympic Committee during the London 2012 Games, analysing athlete injury data and contributing to multiple publications. He continues to compete in endurance events and recently completed a 100km ultramarathon.
