About me
Mr Harvey is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with special interest in all aspects of men's health; he is Bolton NHS Foundation Trust's Lead for Men's Health.
Within this role he has pioneered innovative approaches and improved patient pathways. These include: the assessment and management of men with urinary symptoms, surgical treatments for benign prostatic enlargement, and the delivery of surgical procedures under local anaesthetic. His specific focus in the area of local anaesthetic has led directly to improvements in hydrocele repair, urethral stricture management, bladder cancer laser ablation and minimally invasive surgical therapies for prostatic enlargement.
In the treatment of enlarged prostates, Mr Harvey is currently the only surgeon in the North West of England who offers all of the minimally invasive treatment options that are available. These include: UroLift (Prostatic Urethral Lift), Rezum (Water Vapour Thermal / Steam Ablation Therapy), and iTIND (Temporarily Implanted Nitinol Device). When the additional treatment options of Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) are added to these, he is ensuring that he offers to patients the procedures most suited to them, their needs and their anatomy.
He is an enthusiastic advocator of HoLEP, which offers significant benefits when compared to the conventional TURP treatment for larger prostates. These benefits include: reduced bleeding and length of stay in hospital, increased removal of obstructing prostate tissue and longer lasting treatment. He advises the Greater Manchester Clinical Reference Group on the HoLEP procedure, and in his NHS practice treats many of the largest prostates in the region, receiving referrals from across Greater Manchester and Lancashire for patients needing this treatment.
Academically, he achieved a Distinction in his Master of Science (Urology) for his work on the assessment and surgical management of men with urinary symptoms. He has subsequently published multiple articles and book chapters across the breadth of urology. These include the subjects of prostate cancer, urinary stone disease, reconstructive urology, and urological education.
Mr Harvey is invited regularly to speak and chair sessions at both national and international conferences. These include events for The British Association of Urological Surgeons, and similarly organised urological courses that attract attendees internationally.
Having previously chaired The British Association of Urological Surgeons Section of Trainees, Mr Harvey is heavily invested in medical education, achieving a Distinction in Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. This has led directly to becoming a writer for The Royal College of Surgeons of England's membership examinations. He is currently the head of the region's Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration programme, supervising resident doctors across the region seeking to qualify as Urology Consultants.
