About me

Professor Antoniou is a Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon in Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Clinical Chair at Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), The University of Manchester.

Professor Antoniou specializes in open and keyhole surgery for aortic aneurysm, hybrid (combined open and keyhole) surgery for diseased/blocked arteries in the legs, abdomen and pelvis (peripheral arterial disease), surgery on carotid arteries for stroke prevention, diabetic foot surgery, and treatments for varicose and thread veins. He applies minimally invasive therapies for varicose and thread veins, including radiofrequency ablation, lazer therapy and foam sclerotherapy.

He is certified by the European Board of Vascular Surgery in surgery and vascular surgery.

Having received Clinical Excellence Awards from his NHS organisations, Professor Antoniou has established a strong clinical practice with excellent clinical outcomes, as demonstrated by national audits. Professor Antoniou's clinical work has strongly enhanced the local vascular unit, which provides complex regional vascular services to one of the most deprived areas in the North West.

Professor Antoniou is a world expert in vascular and endovascular surgery with an academic interest is in evidence synthesis, clinical practice guideline development, and aortic aneurysm research. He has published more than 310 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, which have attracted more than 11,000 citations. Several of his publications in the European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery have been selected as the Editor's Choice, and he has been awarded for highly cited work by the Journal of Vascular Surgery.

He is internationally regarded as an opinion leader in vascular/endovascular surgery, as testified by the numerous editorials he is asked to write by the most prestigious journals in the field and lectures he is asked to give in international conferences.

Professor Antoniou chairs the International RIsk stratification in Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (IRIS-EVAR) working group.

Professor Antoniou is the principal investigator (PI) for several National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) clinical studies and sits in the panel of national and international scientific committees, including:
1. European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) Guidelines Steering Committee
2. ESVS European Research Hub
3. Vascular Society Aortic Special Interest Group
4. European and American Hernia Societies Guideline Writing Committee
5. ESVS Guidelines Writing Committee for Descending Thoracic Aorta Diseases

Professor Antoniou is co-ordinator for the Guidelines on Vascular Malformation developed by the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) and the European Reference Network for Rare Multisystemic Vascular Diseases (VASCERN).

Professor Antoniou is Editorial Member of the Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine, Associate Editor for the Hellenic Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, and Statistical Reviewer for the European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery.

Professor Antoniou is a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for doctors in training and a Faculty Member for 4 Masters Postgraduate Programmes.
