About me
Mr Antonios Athanasiou is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Surgeon at University Hospitals of Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. He specialises in advanced minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, for gallbladder disease and gallstones, inguinal and complex hernias, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), hiatus hernias, and a wide range of benign upper gastrointestinal conditions.
He currently serves as the Clinical Lead for Upper GI Surgery. In 2022, Mr Athanasiou established the Upper GI robotic surgery service at University Hospitals of Sussex and has since performed over 500 robotic procedures in the UK using the da Vinci robotic platform, placing him among the most experienced robotic Upper GI surgeons in the region.
Surgical Expertise
Mr Athanasiou has extensive experience in:
Laparoscopic and robotic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
Management of gallstones and gallbladder disease
 Robotic and laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery
 Hiatus hernia repair
Inguinal, ventral, incisional and complex abdominal wall hernia repair
Revisional and complex benign Upper GI surgery
His practice focuses on precision surgery, reduced recovery time, and durable long-term outcomes, using minimally invasive techniques wherever appropriate.
Gallstones and Weight-Loss Injections (Including Mounjaro and Ozempic)
Mr Athanasiou has a specialist and expanding interest in the management of gallstone disease in patients using weight-loss injections, including Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Ozempic (semaglutide), and other GLP-1 receptor agonists.
Rapid or significant weight loss is a recognised risk factor for gallstone formation. Mr Athanasiou increasingly reviews patients who develop biliary colic, cholecystitis, or other gallstone-related complications while using these medications. He provides expert assessment and evidence-based management of gallstones associated with medical weight loss, including elective laparoscopic and robotic cholecystectomy, tailored to each patient's symptoms, anatomy, and overall health.
Training, Research, and Academic Practice
Mr Athanasiou completed comprehensive UK surgical training covering the full spectrum of general and Upper GI surgery, including a specialist fellowship at St James's University Hospital, Leeds, a nationally recognised centre for complex Upper GI and bariatric surgery.
He holds a PhD in liver regeneration, and his academic interests include minimally invasive and robotic surgical innovation, improving patient outcomes, and the metabolic and gastrointestinal implications of obesity. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications in international surgical journals.
Teaching and Leadership
Mr Athanasiou has a strong commitment to medical education and surgical training. He acts as an Educational Supervisor for trainees at multiple levels, including senior Upper GI trainees approaching completion of training. Since 2020, he has also served as a Senior Lecturer at Brighton & Sussex Medical School, contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate education.
Patient-Centred Care
Mr Athanasiou is known for his clear, honest, and patient-centred approach. He provides a detailed explanation of diagnoses, treatment options, and the risks, benefits, and alternatives of surgery, ensuring patients are fully informed and supported in their decision-making. Patient safety, quality of life, and long-term outcomes remain his highest priorities
