About me

Mr McKay is a Consultant adult and paediatric spinal surgeon. He is a fellowship trained specialist and his adult deformity and degenerative practice is based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. His practice here encompasses the full range of degenerative and deformity pathologies throughout the cervical, thoracic and lumbo-sacral spine.

Mr McKay's paediatric deformity practice is based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, a dedicated paediatric centre of excellence. He serves a large and culturally diverse patient population and as such has experience of managing an extensive array of spinal deformity pathologies from birth to adulthood. As well as early and late onset scoliosis surgery, His practice includes caring for a sizeable syndromal and neuromuscular patient cohort.

He was awarded his CCT in Orthopaedic surgery by the Severn Deanery training programme, and subsequently developed specialist skills in spinal surgery under national and international experts at eminent institutions both in the UK and overseas.

He added neurosurgical experience to his training by completing a fellowship at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, a level 1 trauma centre and tertiary referral centre for 4 counties. As part of the complex neurosurgical spine team, he focused on the management of cervical spine conditions, including cranio-cervical and atlantoaxial pathology. He also had the opportunity to train in cervical disc replacement, gained exposure to intradural surgery, as well as furthering his skills in thoracolumbar degenerative surgery.

Following this Mr McKay undertook a year-long fellowship at Westmead Children's Hospital, Sydney, one of the largest paediatric spine units in Australia. He was exposed to a wide range of paediatric deformity in all age groups, and was involved with the emergence of Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering (AVBT) in Australia. His research in this field has been presented internationally in Australia and New Zealand, as well as in the UK.

Mr McKay spent a further year on fellowship at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, which serves as the supra-regional spinal trauma hub for the North Island. Here, he furthered his experience in the management of adult deformity, degenerative pathology (particularly of the cervical spine), and emergency spinal surgery.
