About me

Mr. George McKay is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon working privately at The Priory Hospital and Droitwich Spa Hospital, with his NHS practice previously based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, and Birmingham Children's Hospital. From September 2026 his NHS practice will be based at the University Hospitals Southampton NHS trust. His private practice remains in Birmingham.
A fellowship-trained spinal specialist, he manages the full spectrum of degenerative and deformity conditions across the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spine, offering comprehensive care for both complex and routine spinal pathologies.
Mr. McKay has extensive experience in treating spinal deformities from birth through adulthood. His paediatric work encompasses early and late-onset scoliosis, as well as neuromuscular and congenital spinal disorders.
He received his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Severn Deanery, after which he undertook advanced spinal surgery fellowships with leading UK and international experts.
Mr. McKay gained additional neurosurgical expertise through a fellowship at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, a major trauma and tertiary referral centre, where he developed specialist skills in the management of cervical spine conditions, cranio-cervical and atlantoaxial pathology, and cervical disc replacement. He also gained exposure to intradural and thoracolumbar degenerative surgery.
His international training includes a year-long paediatric spine fellowship at Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney, one of Australia's largest paediatric spine centres, where his research was presented internationally in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. He later completed an additional fellowship at Middlemore Hospital, Auckland, the supra-regional spinal trauma hub for New Zealand's North Island, focusing on adult deformity, degenerative cervical spine conditions, and emergency spinal surgery.
