About me
Jan is a practicing Consultant Urological Surgeon in Sussex at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) and President of the European Board of Urology. He trained in London and the South East of England in Medicine, Surgery and Urology and was appointed a Consultant Urological Surgeon in 1997. His clinical practice is principally a general urological practice which is predominantly endo-urological. He has a particular interest in prostate disease and diseases affecting the lower urinary tract. He has been actively involved in the development, management and clinical practice of an expanding teaching hospital department which serves the population of Sussex and beyond. As wells as his clinical practice, Jan has been actively involved in the education of doctors and surgeons at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has a master’s degree in clinical education as well as his other medical degrees and has previously been Director of Medical Education at BSUH, Associate Dean for postgraduate medical education in the south east of England. For a number of years he has been a UK representative to the European Board of Urology and is involved in improving the quality and standards of education across Europe. The central focus in all his professional activities, whether in clinical practice or in education, is improving patient care. When he is not working he enjoys his family life in the Sussex countryside and sport, especially mountain sports.
Areas of interest
Main area of practice is managing general and common urological conditions:
Urological cancer, including prostate, bladder, kidney and testis.
All prostate problems including benign enlargement of the prostate (BPH), raised PSA and prostatitis.
Kidney, ureteric and bladder stones
All scrotal and penile conditions.
Wide range of operations including many minimally invasive ones. Cystoscopy, circumcision, hydrocele repair, epididymal cyst excision, frenuloplasty, Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP), Bladder neck incision (BNI), Greenlight laser prostate treatment (PVP), Transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT), ureteroscopy, laser treatment for stones and prostate disease, lithotripsy.
Common urinary and genital symptom investigations especially haematuria (blood in the urine), urinary infections including cystistis and pain.
