About me
Dr Chai offers a unique spectrum of comprehensive cardiac care from preventive cardiology (especially lipid management), to interventional cardiology, as well as cardiac rehabilitation. As an elected Rolleston Scholar of St Johns College, University of Cambridge, Dr Chai qualified in clinical medicine from Cambridge with first class honours. He subsequently completed his post-graduate general medical training in St Bartholomews, London Chest, and the Royal London Hospitals, before embarking on Cardiology specialist training in St Georges Hospital and King's College Hospital in London. With the prestigious Medical Research Council Clinical Research Fellowship to pursue his doctoral research, Dr Chai completed his PhD / DPhil in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford.
His research focused on the translational aspect using a novel clinically useful non-invasive MRI technique in characterising atherosclerotic plaque especially lipid composition, which was then correlated to the functional heterogeneity of plaque inflammatory cells using gene expression microarray technology. This novel platform of plaque characterisation showed early promise in facilitating future efforts in patient stratification for more individualised treatment against atherosclerotic disease.
His research has won many awards including Young Investigator Award at the European Atherosclerosis Society, Finalist award for the American Heart Association Melvin Judkins Young Clinical Investigators, and more recently, the Presidents Prize from the Royal Society of Medicine.
Dr Chai joined Wexham Park Hospital, part of Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, after completion of a further post-CCT complex coronary interventional fellowship in Bournemouth. He is currently the Clinical Lead in the Chest Pain Service and the Rapid Access Suspected Angina Clinic. He also chairs the weekly Cardiac CT MDT with his radiology colleagues. He successfully introduced new technology platform into Wexham Park Cardiac Catheter Laboratory - including state-of-the-art intracoronary imaging technique with co-registered Optical Coherence Tomography, and advanced calcium modification techniques using rotational atherectomy and shockwave intravascular lithotripsy, as well as development of a new complex interventional programme at Wexham Park Hospital.
In his spare time, he is an avid wedding and portrait photographer.
