About me

I am a consultant orthopaedic sports, shoulder & upper limb surgeon, specialising in the treatment of disorders of the shoulder and elbow. This ranges from sports injuries and recurrent instability, to problems of the rotator cuff and arthritis.

I graduated from the University of Manchester in 2005 having undertaken a joint degree in Medicine and German, with time spent in both Germany and Austria, and gaining the degree of MBChB with European Studies. Following basic surgical training & a one-year period as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, I completed my higher orthopaedic training in Yorkshire in 2016. During this period, in addition to the award of my Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma & Orthopaedics, I also completed a Masters Degree in Medical Engineering at the University of Leeds, graduating with distinction, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education leading to the award of a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Following completion of training I was fortunate enough to be awarded a one-year fellowship at the world renowned Alps Surgery Institute in Annecy, France, with Dr Laurent Lafosse, one of the pioneers of modern shoulder surgery, during which time I trained intensively & conducted research in the most modern and cutting edge techniques in arthroscopic shoulder preservation and joint replacement. Over this period I also had the privilege of visiting and working alongside some of the current leading figures in world shoulder surgery including Dr Gilles Walch, widely regarded as the godfather of the modern-day Latarjet procedure and a pioneer in the field of shoulder replacement, and Professor George Athwal, Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and one of the current pioneers of shoulder biomechanics.

I followed this with a further fellowship in Cape Town, South Africa, at the internationally acclaimed University of Cape Town Upper Limb Unit, based at the world famous Groote Schuur Hospital, with Professor Steve Roche and Professor Basil Vrettos, as well as spending time with another of the pioneers of modern shoulder surgery, Dr Joe de Beer, at the Cape Shoulder Institute. This time provided a huge exposure and experience in both modern and cutting edge shoulder surgery within a research-focused university clinic, as well as unparalleled experience in the complex treatment of the delayed presentation of shoulder and elbow problems such as arthritis, dislocation & trauma, intrinsic to Cape Town's unique position as a first-world centre within Southern Africa.

I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2017 & took up post following my return from South Africa at the beginning of 2018. I also hold an Honorary Senior Lecturer post with the University of Leeds and a research role within the NIHR Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, currently the most highly cited English Higher Education Institute and NHS organisation respectively in the area of musculoskeletal diseases.
I am the author of several book chapters and numerous articles in international scientific journals.

Fundamentally I have a strong belief in taking the time to listen to and examine my patients and, bringing together my broad scientific and international experience in the treatment of shoulder and elbow problems, help each patient understand the nature of their problem and so involve them fully in the process of tailoring an individual treatment plan to each patients unique situation. I am a firm believer in exploring all the treatment options available, whether personalised rehabilitation and non-operative management with the input of specialist shoulder physiotherapy, non-surgical treatments such as guided injections, or, when appropriate, arthroscopic or open surgical intervention, involving my patients in the decision making process every step of the way.
