About me

Mr Dimitrios Miligkos has been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Southampton since 2014. He completed a two and a half year fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery for the excision of deep endometriosis after securing one of the five training posts offered annually in the UK a testament to his excellence.

He has been awarded a PhD on investigating the role of insulin-like growth factors in the pathogenesis of endometriosis, and continues to have a keen interest in medical research.
He is the Clinical Lead for Gynaecology in Princess Anne Hospital and has led the expansion of the gynaecology department, introduction of robotic surgery in gynaecology and innovations in improving theatre and clinic capacity.

Mr Miligkos is a BSGE accredited surgeon for the excision and management of severe rectovaginal endometriosis and has an interest in neuropelveology with experience in diagnosis and management of endometriosis affecting the pelvic nerves.

He is robotic trained and has introduced robotic surgery in his surgical practice.

Mr Miligkos performs advanced laparoscopic keyhole surgery and operative hysteroscopy and his areas of expertise are minimal access surgery and treatment of deep rectovaginal endometriosis, pelvic pain, menstrual disorders and hormone replacement therapy HRT. He also undertakes colposcopy, management of abnormal smears and vulval skin disorders.

Mr Miligkos has wide surgical experience in laparoscopic hysterectomy total, subtotal, laparoscopic excision of deep rectovaginal endometriosis and adnexal surgery, laparoscopic myomectomy, operative hysteroscopy, reproductive surgery, colposcopy and LLETZ.

Mr Miligkos has multiple research articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals and he participates in multi-centre medical research studies. He is passionate about continuing to progress medical care to the highest levels, caring for and treating women with the best possible treatment wherever possible.

Research interests

I am currently involved in research by contributing in the recruitment of multicenter UK studies.

1. PhD in Medicine - Medical School, University of Athens, Greece
Title: The role of IGF in the pathophysiology of endometriosis
Distinction: Excellent (January 2010)

My research demonstrated for the first time that MGF is expressed in endometriotic tissue and human endometrium and the findings were published in peer reviewed journals.

2. Local primary investigator in Southampton for the REGAL multicenter randomized controlled trial for the management of women with endometriosis.
This is an ongoing trial.

3. I am involved in the recruitment of patients for the DIAMOND and ESPRiT2 multicenter randomized controlled trial for the management of women with chronic endometriosis. These are ongoing trials.

4. Local primary investigator in Southampton for the HEALTH multicenter randomized controlled trial for the management of women with menorrhagia. Recruitment was closed in February 2017.

Personal interests

My hobbies include running, gym workouts, water sports and reading books. I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children and going for relaxing walks in the countryside.

I was awarded a sponsorship to visit Professor Horace Roman in the Tivoli Centre of Endometriosis in Bordeaux, France for 2 weeks. This is one of the most prestigious centers for the management of severe endometriosis.
