About me
Professor Nikhil Vasdev is an internationally recognised authority in robotic urological surgery and urological oncology, renowned for combining clinical excellence with surgical innovation, academic leadership and translational research. His work spans advanced robotic surgery, artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, precision oncology and surgical education, with leadership roles across the NHS and international academic institutions.
He is Professor and Chair of Robotic Surgery at the School of Life and Medical Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, and Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Urological Cancer Centre, Lister Hospital, UK. He also serves as International Professor and Visiting Consultant Urological Surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. In recognition of his international reputation, he has been appointed International Section Editor for Urology in the forthcoming Gray's Surgical Anatomy (2026).
Since 2019, Professor Vasdev has served as Associate Medical Director for Cancer Services (Cancer Lead) at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, leading major cancer service transformation and performance improvement programmes. His work was recognised nationally when featured on BBC News in 2025. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led cancer services across the Trust, ensuring uninterrupted delivery of urgent cancer care. He also completed the Prostate Cancer UK Clinical Champion Programme in 2022.
An internationally accredited robotic surgery proctor, Professor Vasdev mentors surgeons throughout Europe and Asia, including India, Hong Kong, Jordan and Thailand. He proctored Jordan's first robotic urological procedure and performed one of Thailand's earliest live robotic radical cystectomy demonstrations. His clinical expertise encompasses robotic surgery for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer, including NeuroSAFE robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion, partial and radical nephrectomy, reconstructive surgery and advanced pelvic oncology. He established Hertfordshire's Robotic Aquablation Programme in 2023 and previously introduced the regional Blue Light Cystoscopy service for bladder cancer.
Over more than a decade as a consultant, Professor Vasdev has performed in excess of 1800 robotic urological procedures, placing him among the highest-volume robotic urological cancer surgeons in the United Kingdom. He was the UK's first nationally accredited Royal College of Surgeons of England and BAUS Robotic Fellow and was awarded a ChM (Urology) with Distinction by the University of Edinburgh for pioneering research into intra-operative frozen section analysis to optimise nerve preservation and reduce positive surgical margins during robotic prostatectomy.
His contributions have been recognised through numerous national and international honours, including the University of Hertfordshire Doctor of Science (DSc), the Responsible AI UK National AI Champion Award, the International Surgical Innovation Award, and Outstanding Contribution Awards from Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, for his work in AI, robotic surgery and prostate cancer research.
Professor Vasdev has published more than 240 peer-reviewed papers, over 460 conference abstracts, 20 book chapters and two textbooks on urological cancer.
His research focuses on integrating artificial intelligence, advanced imaging and precision surgery to improve oncological and functional outcomes for patients with urological cancers. Through clinical innovation, international collaboration, education and mentorship, Professor Vasdev continues to advance robotic surgery and shape the future of urological cancer care worldwide.
