About me

If you are looking at my profile, you are likely to be going through one of the most challenging times of your life. You will have been given a diagnosis that may be frightening, leaving you scared and confused. You may want certainty where there appears to be little or none. This will be an association that will last some time and I see my main role as being there to help you navigate through this sometimes bewildering and frightening time.

I am interested in knowing you, and what matters most to you, so that we can make the best decisions, about your care, with your full involvement. My maxim is ‘compassionate honesty’, so you always know where you stand, and so you can trust what I say. It is my core aim to make the treatment process and aims as understandable as possible, and to answer each question you have. I will formulate a plan with you, so you can be as secure as possible, knowing that you are being cared for by me, and a support team, who want to get it right for you each step of the way.

I am a locally trained Medical Oncologist, specialising in the medical treatment of Breast cancer, currently working at Harrogate District Hospital. I have more than 20 years of experience in Oncology (cancer medicine), 11 of those as a consultant. I have a PhD, and am active in research, acting as the local lead on clinical trials.

I am the Clinical Director of the West Yorkshire & Harrogate Cancer Alliance Breast Optimal Pathways Group and am very interested in finding ways to meet the serious challenges we face in today’s environment of high volume and complex treatments.

I highly value the positive impact of good communication on the experience of care and have co-facilitated the TARGET & TRUSTING courses devised by Professors Val Jenkins and Lesley Fallowfield, of the SHORE-C group. These courses for breast cancer healthcare professionals aim to improve understanding and discussion around inherited breast cancers, modern tumour tests, and risk.

I believe my approach is best validated by my patients, who nominated my team and I for Mid Yorkshire's 'Kate Granger Compassionate Care Award'. We were shortlisted from 70 nominations from across the Trust, and subsequently won.
