About me

Mr Ian M Smith is one of Yorkshire's most experienced Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, with more than 20 years' consultant experience. He provides specialist assessment and treatment for adults and children with a wide range of plastic and reconstructive conditions, including skin cancer, skin lesions, complex soft tissue conditions, facial and head and neck conditions and congenital or acquired abnormalities.

Mr Smith is Lead Clinician for Plastic Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Lead Clinician for the Yorkshire Sarcoma Service. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds, Training Programme Director for Plastic Surgery for Yorkshire and the Humber, Chair of the Board of Examiners for the FRCS (Plast) and Honorary Treasurer of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

Clinical expertise
Mr Smith's specialist clinical interests include:
• Plastic and reconstructive surgery
• Skin cancer and skin lesion surgery
• Complex soft tissue reconstruction
• Microsurgical reconstruction
• Paediatric plastic surgery

Mr Smith has extensive experience in the assessment and surgical treatment of skin cancers and other skin and soft tissue lesions, including non-melanoma skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, suspicious moles and other benign lesions such as lipomas.
Where removal of a lesion creates a defect requiring specialist reconstruction, he can provide appropriate reconstructive techniques, including local tissue reconstruction and skin grafting where clinically indicated.

As Lead Clinician for the Yorkshire Sarcoma Service, Mr Smith has particular expertise in complex reconstruction following cancer surgery. His practice includes facial, head and neck, soft tissue, sarcoma and microsurgical reconstruction.
He works closely with multidisciplinary teams in the management of complex cancer patients and has a particular professional interest in surgical oncology, sarcoma management and reconstructive surgery.

Mr Smith qualified in Dentistry at the University of Birmingham before qualifying in Medicine at the University of Leeds. He completed higher specialist training in Plastic Surgery and achieved the Intercollegiate Fellowship in Plastic Surgery.
He subsequently undertook fellowships in Craniofacial Surgery at the Australian Craniofacial Unit in Adelaide and Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Australia. Mr Smith has also completed an MSc by Research at the University of Leeds and has published and presented research in plastic, reconstructive and craniofacial surgery.

Mr Smith sees patients from Leeds, Yorkshire and surrounding areas and accepts referrals for appropriate plastic, reconstructive and skin cancer conditions. Private consultations and treatment are subject to clinical suitability and insurance authorisation.

Patients should contact Bupa before arranging treatment to confirm that their individual policy covers the proposed consultation and treatment and to establish whether referral or pre-authorisation is required.

Paediatric plastic surgery
Mr Smith sees children from birth at Spire Leeds Hospital and Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital. He treats children aged 3 years and over, depending on their condition and clinical circumstances. Both Leeds hospitals have dedicated specialist paediatric nursing teams and work only with paediatric anaesthetists based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

He assesses and treats a range of congenital, developmental and acquired conditions requiring specialist plastic surgical expertise. Parents and carers can discuss their child's individual condition and treatment options during consultation.
