About me
Dr Hellner is a Consultant Gynaecologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Clinical Lead for Colposcopy and Senior Fellow in Women's Health at the Nuffield Department of Reproductive & Women's Health, Oxford University. She received her medical degree from the Humboldt-University of Berlin, Germany, and trained in Obstetrics & Gynaecology between 2004 and 2015 in Berlin and Oxford. She has a medical PhD and spent 4 years as a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, where she worked with Professor Karl Munger, who’s work paved the way to discover how cancers develop following infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr Hellner joined the University of Oxford in 2011, where she is leading a research program in the field of molecular biology and clinical management of HPV induced cervical disease. She has authored many papers and published a book chapter. Her clinical work focusses on detection and treatment of precancerous cervical disease. She is the chief investigator of an international vaccine trial – the first of its kind aiming to treat persistent HPV infection in women with low-grade lesions. Dr Hellner is a member of the editorial board of several international research journals and a peer reviewer for leading research organizations. She has supervised and examined a number of degrees including PhD, MSc and MD. She is an elected member of the Society for Reproductive Investigation and sits on the executive board of the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) and is an accredited colposcopy trainer and examiner. She volunteers as expert reviewer for Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust Charity in her spare time.
