About me

Mr Ruwan Fernando has been a Consultant Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologisy Subspecialist at St Mary’s Hospital since 2006. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Imperial College, London.

Mr Fernando received his specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Southend Hospital, Essex; University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent; Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds and Mayday University Hospital, Croydon, Surrey. He has more than 15 years experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Mr. Fernando is also accredited as a Specialist in Urogynaecology (Specialised in treating patients with urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, bladder and bowel problems during pregnancy and after childbirth).

He has done extensive research on prevention and treatment of perineal injury during childbirth. He was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from Keele University, Staffordshire for his research. He has published over 100 peer reviewed reserach papers in reputed medical journals (Please refer Pubmed) and has won several prizes for his research.

Mr.Fernando is the first author of the national guidelines on “Management of 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears” produced by the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (Please refer the RCOG website) and also the principal author of the Cochrane Review on “Methods of repair for 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears”. He also conducts national and international workshops to teach the doctors and midwives how to identify and repair perineal tears after childbirth. He is a renowned guest lecturer at national and international conferences. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the StratOG (Postgraduate E-learning modules of the RCOG) and also a member of the FIGO working group on Pelvic Floor Dysfunction.
