About me
Dr Willert is a senior Consultant Gastroenterologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary and is Clinical
Director of the Manchester Bowel Cancer Screening programme.
He specialises in seeing patients with digestive disorders and symptoms including:
Heartburn (gastro oesophageal reflux disease), Barretts oesophagus, indigestion (dyspepsia),
abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation, rectal bleeding, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory
bowel disease and the investigation and nutritional management of weight loss, food intolerance and
disorders of brain-gut interactions.
He is an expert in bowel cancer screening colonoscopy and has specialist endoscopic expertise in the diagnosis and removal of pre-cancerous polyps using advanced endoscopic techniques.
He is also an endoscopy trainer for the North West and nationally accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist, for which he provides a weekly regional screening colonoscopy and advanced specialist polypectomy / EMR service for patients across the conurbation.
He also has specialist endoscopic expertise in providing BRAVO wireless pH assessment for oesophageal reflux and endoscopic diagnosis and management of Barretts oesophagus including mucosal resection and HALO radiofrequency ablation therapy.
He is one of only a handful of Consultant Adult Gastroenterologists regionally who are accredited to provide private holistic care to adolescent patients with digestive issues aged 16 to 18.
Dr Willert is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and completed a joint
physiology/pharmacology degree with first class honours in 1993 and qualified in medicine with
honours in 1996. He subsequently completed a PhD from the University of Manchester in 2004 and
was appointed a Consultant in 2007.
In 2006 he was awarded an international training fellowship in Perth, Western Australia where he
spent a year specialising in the endoscopic and medical management of complex gastrointestinal
diseases.
He has published original research widely and continues to do so and is a national speaker on
gastrointestinal disorders. He has recently sat on the NICE committee developing national guidelines
and has ongoing clinical research studies in Barrett's oesophagus and inflammatory bowel disease.
He is also passionate about teaching and is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of
Manchester.
