About me

Mr. William Bartlett MBBS BSc MRCS FRCSEd (Tr&Orth) is an experienced Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the non-operative and surgical management of hip and knee conditions.
Appointed as a Consultant in 2011, his NHS work is based at the Whittington Hospital and University College London Hospital, whilst his private practice is based at the London Hip Unit.
William began his medical career in 1994 at University College London, completing surgical training in London before undertaking a fellowship in joint replacement surgery at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. Later, as a Consultant, he also made visitations to leading European and North American centres in order to learn newer surgical techniques.
He treats a broad range of patients, from young and active adults to the elderly, including those previously deemed unsuitable for surgery due to age, weight, or fitness. Initially, non-surgical options are carefully explored, often in collaboration with physiotherapists, osteopaths, radiologists, and physicians. If surgery is needed, William will use modern bone and muscle-preserving techniques together with proven prostheses. He is an advocate for using technology to improve surgical planning, accuracy and patient outcomes. Mr. Bartlett is among the UK's most experienced surgeons in robotic joint replacement, having performed around 1,000 cases using the Stryker Mako robotic system, and frequently receives surgeons from around the world to seeking to learn the technique.
As clinical lead, William was proud to play a pivotal role in enhancing elective orthopaedic care for local patients by establishing a collaboration between UCLH and Whittington Health Orthopaedic departments. He leads an enhanced recovery program and regularly performs "daycase" joint replacement surgery for selected patients. His research focuses on biological joint repair, custom-made prostheses, and the early evaluation of new hip prostheses. He mentors surgeons in training, serves as faculty for postgraduate surgical courses, and reviews scientific manuscripts for journals including The Bone and Joint Journal.
