About me
I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in diseases of the retina including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetes and inflammatory diseases. I have a surgical interest in cataract surgery with specialist lens implants including those with extended focal range.
I am a senior consultant at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, with private practice at Spire Hospital Liverpool.
He has extensive experience in the assessment of "wet" and "dry" AMD, and in the treatment of wet AMD and other macular conditions with injectable medicines such as Vabysmo, Eylea, Lucentis, Avastin and Ozurdex. He was a member of the NICE Committee for AMD Clinical Guidelines which issued guidance in 2018. He is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Scientific Committee.
He is a leading specialist in how medical conditions affect the eye including diabetes and inflammatory conditions (uveitis). His medical retina practice also includes purely ocular diseases such as central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR or CSR) and retinal toxicity.
He is an expert cataract surgeon with excellent patient satisfaction. He also provides a general ophthalmology service, including glaucoma, lid disease and dry eyes. He strives to ensure patients have an understanding of their condition and treatment options.
Mr. Beare qualified from Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities. He undertook specialist training in Ophthalmology at Bristol Eye Hospital and St Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool. In addition he worked in Malawi for 3 years culminating in a thesis on Malarial Retinopathy, for which he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) by the University of Liverpool.
He is a Reader in the University of Liverpool Dept of Eye and Vision Science. He continues research on malaria, and is also involved in international trials of new treatments for AMD, uveitis (inflammation of the eye) and diabetic eye disease. He has written over 80 scientific papers, as well as the ophthalmology section in three medical textbooks on tropical diseases.
