Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist

Dr Sanjay Gupta graduated in Medicine from India in 1987. He completed his MD (Medicine) and Diplomate of National Board (Medicine) in 1990 and 1991 respectively. After working as Registrar in India, he completed his MRCP (UK) in 1997. He trained in Gastroenterology, initially as Research Registrar at Mayday University Hospital and then as a trainee in South West London rotation. His research was on Barretts oesophagus.
He was awarded CCT in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in 2006 and FRCP in 2011. After having worked as a locum Consultant at Mayday Hospital for 2 years, he was appointed as a substantive Consultant in July 2008. Dr Gupta was Training Lead for endoscopy from 2008 to 2011. He is currently Lead for Upper GI cancer, Hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer and was joint lead of Nutrition Support team at Croydon University Hospital until 2017. He is also the Duty of candour lead for the Trust and was one of the freedom to Speak Up guardians. Dr Gupta is the lead for endoscopy at Shirley Oaks Hospital which is a conditional JAG accredited endoscopy facility. He has previously been the lead for Upper GI bleeds and Clostridium difficile team improving both services and presenting data at national conferences? He has been actively involved in developing policies and protocols in Gastroenterology and Medicine including developing shared pathways between primary and secondary care. He takes part in the on-call rota for Medicine and GI bleeds at Croydon University Hospital. He has published and presented papers at various conferences and has over 50 publications/abstracts in peer reviewed journal with publications on a wide range of topics in gastroenterology and medicine. He is the Principal investigator in an international study in Inflammatory bowel disease which finished recruitment in December 2018. He has also been actively involved in teaching various grades of health care professionals including GPs and trainees in medicine and gastroenterology. He leads a service on Barrett's oesophagus surveillance and is the sole operator for surveillance. He is upper GI and HPB cancer lead for the Trust and has been the joint Cancer Lead for Croydon University Hospital for nearly 4 years. He is actively involved in audit and us the lead for the National oesophagi-gastric cancer audit. He works in close liaison with the Clinical Commissioning Group in Croydon to develop protocols, pathways and Royal Marsden Hospital for Cancer. His work as joint lead of Nutrition Support Team was shortlisted for BMJ awards in Clinical leadership category. He is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, British Medical Association and Royal College of Physicians London.
