About me

Dr Iqbal Khan is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Northampton General Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer with the Universities of Oxford and Leicester. He is the former lead for Endoscopy and Gastroenterology services and was responsible for the smooth running of an extremely busy endoscopy unit, serving a population approaching half a million (including the care of patients with GI cancer). He is still involved in Endoscopy Governance, which ensures that the care delivered to patients is of the highest possible standard.

Dr Khan’s medical practice includes all aspects of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General (internal) Medicine. This especially includes the investigation and management of GI cancer, abdominal pain, liver disease, pancreatic disease, altered bowel habit (including irritable bowel syndrome), nutritional problems and weight change.

He has a special interest in GI cancer and endoscopy and as a result of this is highly skilled in endoscopy work. This includes the placement of feeding tubes, stricture dilatation, stent placement, polypectomy, variceal banding and ERCP.

Dr Khan is also passionate about training future doctors and therefore is heavily involved in the training of medical students and junior doctors. He has written several books and is a moderator for a web application designed to facilitate doctors in training. He is also involved with a mentorship programme for 6th formers aspiring to study medicine.

Dr Khan was born and educated in Birmingham. He graduated from the University of Sheffield with a medical degree (MBChB) a BSc (Dual Hons) and PhD – investigating the mechanisms by which patients experience abdominal pain and nausea symptoms. His specialist training prior to his consultant post involved working at most of the major hospitals in the West Midlands. He now lives in Northamptonshire with his wife and three children.
