About me
I am a senior consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon in full-time clinical practice at the Plymouth Nuffield Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (Derriford Hospital) and the Peninsula Major Trauma Centre.
I have a busy orthopaedic practice with a significant trauma, reconstructive and sports injury workload. My practice encompasses complex and revision cases referred from colleagues in Plymouth and the south west. From 2005 to 2013 I was the only permanent NHS shoulder and elbow trauma specialist at Plymouth, now the Major Trauma Centre for the South West Peninsula.
Within my specialist field, I subspecialise in:
Orthopaedic surgery including arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery: shoulder, knee, elbow surgery, joint replacement, sports injuries, upper limb surgery
Trauma surgery (bone, joint, tendon, ligament injuries, including complex post-traumatic reconstruction)
Sports injuries (surgical and non-surgical treatment and rehabilitation)
Medical education (orthopaedic and arthroscopic surgery, sport and exercise medicine)
Medicolegal reports (personal injury and clinical negligence claims).
I qualified in Medicine from the University of Bristol in 1992 and trained in surgery in Bristol, Bath, and Plymouth; I taught Anatomy at the University of Southampton and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998. I undertook higher surgical training at Southampton University Hospital, was awarded a higher Fellowship in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2003, and undertook senior specialist fellowships in orthopaedic surgery, knee surgery, joint replacement surgery, trauma surgery and sports injuries, before I was appointed as a specialist Consultant in Plymouth in 2005.
I have been awarded 2 national surgical awards: the prestigious RCSEd/Ethicon Travelling Fellowship and the highly-prized BESS European Travelling Fellowship. These enabled me to travel to overseas centres to study arthroscopic procedures in detail with world-renowned surgeons before introducing them into my own practice.
I was awarded a Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine from University College London in 2005, with a dissertation on the surgical management of complex knee ligament injuries; Foundation Membership of the UK Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine in 2006; and an Honorary Fellowship in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Exeter in 2007.
Teaching, lecturing and examiner posts:
Founding programme lead of the UK’s first multi-disciplinary MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine, University of Exeter (2007-2014); Senior faculty member of the “Watanabe Club”, a group of committed senior surgeons who teach advanced arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery to senior trainees and consultants nationally (2004-date); Co-organiser of the annual Stryker Shoulder Soft Tissue Masterclass course, Cambridge and Amsterdam (2015-date); Lecturer and examiner, MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine, University College London (2004-8); Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery Training Committee, Peninsula Postgraduate Deanery (2007-2015); Co-organiser of SportsMed SouthWest, the only annual Sport and Exercise Medicine Conference outside London (2007-2016)
International, national and local posts held in Sports Medicine:
Finish line physician, Hawaii Ironman Triathlon 1991; Team Physician, British Triathlon Association 1992-2002; Medical Director, Commonwealth Games Triathlon, Manchester 2002; Medical Committee, International Triathlon Union 2001- 2005; Honorary Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Consultant to Plymouth Argyle FC, Plymouth Albion RFC and Plymouth Raiders pro basketball team 2007-date
