About me
James is a highly experienced knee surgeon who is internationally recognised for his work in ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery, meniscus repair, and complex knee reconstruction. Based in Bristol and Bath, he is a founding partner of Knee Specialists; a leading clinic focused on diagnosing and treating all types of knee injuries and conditions.
Patients value not only his surgical skill but also his patient-centred approach. James takes time to understand your symptoms, lifestyle, and goals, and he explains your treatment options clearly, whether surgery is needed or not. He has particular expertise in arthroscopic keyhole procedures, ligament reconstruction, partial knee replacement, cartilage and meniscus repair, and the treatment of early arthritis. He frequently receives referrals for complex cases from across the UK..
Beyond his clinical work, James helps shape the future of knee surgery globally. He is Co-Chair of the Knee Sports and Preservation Committee for ISAKOS, sits on the scientific committee of the ACL Study Group, and previously led the Collateral Ligaments Working Group for ESSKA. He is also part of the Meniscus International Network, reviews research for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and serves on the steering committee of the UK National Ligament Registry.
James trained in London and completed a Master of Surgery degree at Imperial College, where he studied the biomechanics of the medial collateral ligament. His specialist training included fellowships at the renowned Clinique du Sport in Bordeaux and the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol, where he later became a Consultant specialising in complex knee reconstruction. From 2016 to 2018, he further developed his expertise during a sabbatical at the International Knee and Joint Centre in Abu Dhabi.
He has published more than 90 scientific papers and book chapters and contributed to major international guidelines, including the ESSKA recommendations on revision ACL surgery and a joint EUUS consensus on meniscus rehabilitation. His work has earned several national and international awards, such as the BASK President's Medal and honours from both the French and German arthroscopy societies.
James is regularly invited to speak at major international conferences and demonstrate surgical techniques on meniscus repair and ligament reconstruction, with recent invited talks delivered to orthopaedic associations in South Africa, the Netherlands, Norway, and Denmark.
Through teaching and lecturing worldwide, James stays at the forefront of the latest techniques and research. Whether you're recovering from a sports injury or looking for expert help with a long-standing knee problem, he is dedicated to providing world-class care with a personal and compassionate approach.
