About me
Dr Karim Saad MBChB, FRCPsych
Consultant Psychiatrist
I run private outpatient clinics in Warwickshire and I welcome referrals for suspected or established cognitive impairment, all types of dementia, including younger onset dementia (where symptoms begin during 'working age').
I provide an assessment and treatment service for
depression, anxiety, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, delusional disorder, delirium, addictions and psychotic disorders in the elderly.
I encourage a focus on 'active ageing', enhancing cognitive resilience, and the prevention of dementia risk factors where possible.
I worked as a full time consultant psychiatrist at Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust for 21 years, where I was an examiner and clinical teacher at Warwick Medical School. For over a decade I held a series of regional roles the last of which was clinical director of the West Midlands dementia clinical network, at NHS England.
I was a General Medical Council (GMC) Associate working as a Professional and Linguistics Assessment Board (PLAB) examiner, and following this as Healthcare Assessor/Medical Supervisor.
I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and I am on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register as an Old Age Psychiatrist.
I am experienced in the use of the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and I welcome referrals from solicitors for capacity assessments e.g. Lasting Powers of Attorney, Testamentary Capacity and Court of Protection assessments.
I am privileged for having worked at health policy level towards transforming the provision of dementia care in the UK and in Europe, including positively influencing cultural and societal perceptions of dementia.
I set up a multi-award winning younger onset dementia service in Coventry, and I chaired the Midlands regional younger person with dementia forum. I founded a dementia awareness module targeting schools in the West Midlands, which evolved into a national intergenerational pioneer project linked to the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia. I was fortunate to collaborate with the Department of Health, the Alzheimer's Society and journalist Angela Rippon CBE to evaluate and implement our findings nationally.
I served as department of health clinical representative at the European Commission’s Governmental Experts Group on Dementia. I was an executive board member and UK chair of the ALzheimer COoperative Valuation in Europe (ALCOVE) joint action, which generated European clinical consensus recommendations, covering the delivery of a ‘Timely Accurate Dementia Diagnosis’ and safer prescribing.
I was an honorary member of the National Institute of health Research (NIHR) faculty, and a member of the Mental Psychological and Occupational Health (MPOH) panel in London, which prioritised national research within the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme. I have numerous peer-reviewed publications to my name including an international textbook chapter on the international perspectives of dementia.
