About me
Mr. Lawes has worked as a consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells (MTW) NHS Trust since 2007 and has been the Clincal Director for Surgery since 2016. Since his appointment to the trust he has been involved in developing a number of advances in practice including minimally invasive colorectal surgery, enhanced patient recovery following major surgery, setting up a pelvic floor service and integrating gastro-enterology and surgical clinics for the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In addition Mr. Lawes has held a number of other key roles in the organisation and region including lead for governance and patient safety, lead for colorectal surgery, chairman of the Kent and Medway Colorectal Cancer Group and NIHR lead for colorectal research for Kent, Surry and Sussex.
He qualified from University College London (UCL) Medical School in 1993 having gained a BSc degree in physiology during his studies. He became an anatomy demonstrator at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School and subsequently commenced his surgical training as SHO at UCL and The Middlesex Hospital. On gaining the FRCS examination he trained in North East Thames as a general surgery registrar before becoming a Lecturer at UCL, undertaking a laboratory based research degree investigating the genetic causes predisposing to the development of colorectal cancer which culminated in a Doctor of Medicine degree. On returning to clinical training he focused on colorectal and laparoscopic surgery working at University College London, The Royal London and St. Bartholomew's Hospital and St. Marks Hospital before moving to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, USA where he undertook a fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery and was awarded the position of Assistant Professor of Colorectal Surgery. On returning from the USA in 2007, Mr. Lawes took up his position as Consultant Surgeon at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust..
He has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and hernia surgery.
