About me
I trained at the Royal Free Hospital in London and qualified as a Doctor in 1995. Having obtained a medical cadetship from the RAMC whilst at medical school, I attended Sandhurst after house-jobs and then served six more exciting and dynamic years in the military: after three years of general duties I was accepted onto the Anaesthesia training programme, on completing my SHO jobs I transferred into the NHS as a Registrar in the North West, close to my family. As i had undertaken a lot of musculo-skeletal training with the Military, this naturally led onto an interest in Pain Medicine, and I completed my advanced training accordingly.
In 2007 I was appointed to a Consultant post in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, I worked here up until 2026, For ten years I was the Clinical lead for Chronic Pain, and I also worked in affiliated community settings in Buxton and joined the Macclesfield team in 2011 when their service nearly closed, it is now thriving. I had a rewarding career in the NHS.
I have worked in the private sector since 2008 and have developed close links with Neuroscience. I am a member of OrthTeam, a friendly medically led collaborative group of leading Doctors in South Manchester where I participate in fortnightly meetings of the Spinal Multi Disciplinary Team which involves Neurosurgery, Radiology, MSK medicine and Pain medicine Consultants. This was the first private Spinal MDT in the North West, and allows us all the opportunity to discuss spinal cases in confidence to ensure best practice.
I am lucky to work closely with the neurosurgeons: Professor King, Mr Leach, Mr Rutherford, Mr Josan, Mr Bukhari, and Mr Saxena.I also have strong links with Rheumatology, Neurology, Sports medicine, and Radiology.
It is rewarding to work in the private sector, alongside an expert team of consultant colleagues across multiple specialties to provide comprehensive, collaborative patient care.
I live with my family in the Peak District, and am interested in running and motorsport.
Areas of interest
Spinal Pain; Epidural steroid injections, cervical and lumbar for pain from trapped spinal nerves.
Medial branch nerve blocks and denervation for spinal facet joint pain. These procedures are simple and effective treatments that can reduce pain and improve physical function.
Shoulders; suprascapular nerve denervations, for patients with shoulder arthritis who wish to avoid surgery. I have access to a cryotherapy machine at the OrthTeam Centre which provides a safer and more comfortable denervation and is compatible for patients with pacemakers.
Qutenza; I have access to Qutenza capsaicin plasters which are used for peripheral neuropathic pain. This is not funded by many insurers but is a useful treatment for localised peripheral nerve pain.
The use of medicines to help control pain is changing a lot, I follow this evidence based approach and can review pain medications accordingly. Please bring along your prescription.
