About me

Professor Rajan Sharma is a consultant cardiologist with a subspecialty interest in
echocardiography, heart valve disease, cardio-oncology, and functional assessment of
coronary artery disease. He qualified from Guy's and St Thomas' United Medical School of
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and trained in a number of London institutions
as well as Southampton University Hospital Cardiothoracic Unit. He is Cardiology and
Cardiac Surgery Clinical Director at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
and has undertaken a number of leadership roles within the NHS.
Professor Sharma has extensive expertise in managing a broad range of cardiac conditions,
including coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy,
hypertension, and arrhythmias. He regularly assesses patients with symptoms such as chest
pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, and blackouts. He also has a specialist interest
in preventative cardiology and microvascular angina and supports patients seeking to
understand and manage their individual cardiovascular risk. He adopts a holistic, patient-
centred approach, combining lifestyle advice with advanced diagnostic testing and
appropriate medical or interventional therapies.
Professor Sharma is considered a national and international expert in complex
echocardiography (ultrasound scanning of the heart). This includes transoesophageal
echocardiography, stress echocardiography, deformation imaging, contrast
echocardiography and three-dimensional echocardiography. These techniques allow
detailed evaluation of patients with suspected heart muscle disease, coronary artery
disease, and valvular heart disease. He is a recognised expert of stress echocardiography
for the DVLA and CAA.?
His research focuses on the dynamic assessment of coronary and valvular heart disease, as
well as cardiovascular risk in specific population groups. He has authored over 100 peer-
reviewed publications and presented widely at national and international conferences,
particularly in the fields of quantitative echocardiography, coronary artery disease,
cardiomyopathy, heart rate variability, and valve pathology.
