About me

Rana Sayeed is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He studied Medical Sciences at Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge before graduating from Oxford University Medical School in 1991. He completed his PhD, studying altered gene expression in heart disease, as a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellow back at the University of Cambridge. He completed specialist training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, and at Norwich, followed by a Fellowship in General Thoracic Surgery & Lung Transplantation at the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England (FRCS[C-Th]) and Edinburgh (FRCSEd) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP). He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Oxford Heart Centre in 2007.
His principal clinical interest is in mitral valve repair and he is the Head of Programme for Complex Mitral Valve Surgery at Oxford; he also helped to establish the trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) programme.
In addition to his clinical roles at Oxford, he is the Honorary Secretary of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in GB & Ireland. He has been Training Programme Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery at Oxford, a Joint College/Specialty Association representative on the Specialty Advisory Committee in Cardiothoracic Surgery that is responsible for national training in this specialty, and Chair of the Intercollegiate Specialty Board, which conducts the formal examination of cardiothoracic surgeons at the end of their training.
