About me
I'm a Registered Clinical Psychologist, Chartered with the British Psychological Society, and I qualified in 2000, so I have 18 years post-qualification experience.
My approach is founded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to which I add psychodynamic, humanistic and gestalt techniques.
For me, each of us is on an inner journey, so I have developed a way of integrating many techniques which I call Journeybuilding. When people find themselves feeling lost or in a difficult place, their therapist is a guide who can help them to get out of the hole they're in and up to the next level in their life, towards where they want to be. As a therapist I'm a combination of companion, surveyor and tracker: I'm a companion in that I'm here to listen and support you. But I'm also an expert in my field, and I give you surveys to find out where your problems are, so we can help you get around or over them. And I'm a tracker: my job is also to read whats happening right in front of us, in the room, in the moment, and to follow intuitions and emotions where they lead.
Some therapists are mostly companioins and trackers: they listen and they follow events in the session without much of a plan. Having been on the receiving end of that approach myself as a client, I felt frustrated and found it too lengthy, because we ended up going round in circles, covering the same ground again and again! So I prefer where possible, to survey what problems you have, and make a step by step plan. Of course, from week to week you will find yourself in different places emotionally, so we will necessarily end up jumping from topic to topic. But so long as we have a plan, we can make sure we're heading in the right direction, and we will get to where you want to go as efficiently as possible.
To help me in in my surveyor role, I've developed some software called Psycnav, which is like satnav for psychology: it displays the results from our surveys on a grid, to show where your problems are located. This I think is vital if you want an integrated solution to your problems. All too often, you'll find specialists claiming that their treatment is the complete answer to your problems. But I find that people's problems often have many levels: anxiety and depression may have a biological root in genetic susceptibility, which can be helped by dietary changes. It may have a root in internal conflicts between different sides of yourself. It may have a lot to do with your personal beliefs and habits. You may have relationship difficulties, or you may be living and working in a difficult social environment. So a complete solution may include medical, psychological, interpersonal, and social components.
I see my role as not just to offer you psychological therapy, but to provide you with insight into the structure of the difficulties you face, so you can find solutions not just in therapy but also in other modalities which may complement the therapy. With such insight will come more skill in recognising and formulating your difficulties, so that now and in future you will be quicker to recognise and faster to resolve any difficulties you face.
