A bit about me:
I am a Clinical Psychologist who qualified in 2002 - I have worked throughout this time in the NHS and in my own private practice. My career has included working in services across the lifespan; with adults and older adults and in child and adolescent mental health services. I have also worked in secure settings, in crisis, and in brain injury services, all of which have brought a wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience to my working practice.

I am a qualified CAT practitioner, which is advantageous when working with people with complex and long-term problems. I have also trained in EMDR, which means that I have a range of skills I can apply to work with trauma. I am a professional, warm, and honest therapist, with my guiding principle being to treat clients as I would want myself or a member of my family to be treated.

I am an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Chartered Clinical Psychologist. I am also a member of ACAT, the EMDR Association UK, and the HCPC.

So, what do I do?
I think that therapy works best when a person feels sufficiently motivated and ready to make changes in their life. Therapy is hard work. It requires answering difficult questions and talking about painful and stressful things. Having goals for therapy is important, as it helps guide the work and keep it on track. Do not worry if you do not immediately know what these are, we can work it out together.

Irrespective of the type of problem you come for, together we will work on trying to understand what has brought you to feel as you do now. We will be looking at what might have caused the difficulties and what is keeping them going. Understanding better why you feel as you do can be powerful in the healing process and can help people develop greater self-compassion. From developing a shared understanding, it will become clearer what intervention might help.

The work itself depends on your difficulties and your goals but is usually a combination of talking things through and trying out new things, at a pace that you can manage. Doing new things is usually a combination of enhancing your existing coping strategies and testing things out in different or difficult situations, thereby directly trying to change the things that have kept you feeling low, anxious, or stuck. We may also discuss strategies for learning to accept and cope with the things that you cannot change. I am also likely to make suggestions about your well-being to achieve and maintain good psychological health both now and in the future.

A final thought:
It can be very difficult for people to ask for help in the first place. As a society, we are getting better at talking about feelings, but it can still feel like it’s “only me” and sessions may feel initially exposing and awkward. It is completely understandable to feel those things, and we can work through them together. It can also be useful to have an initial conversation or session with a therapist, to see if you can connect with them, and this is something that I am happy to offer.

I offer sessions, either online or face-to-face, and am based on Rugby.
