About me

I undertook undergraduate medical training and clinical medical training in Cambridge and Oxford Universities respectively, qualifying in1992. Following junior doctor appointments in Glasgow, Oxford and Cambridge, I moved to Edinburgh to undertake my specialist respiratory training, subsequently taking my PhD there in the cell biology of lung cancer.

My present Appointment is Consultant Respiratory Physician, Royal Papworth Hospital Thoracic Oncology and Hinchingbrooke Hospital Dept. of Respiratory Medicine, where I was jointly appointed in 2005.
In this post, 40 per cent of my time is employed at Papworth Hospital, where I jointly run the Thoracic Oncology Service. This is primarily an investigative service to diagnose and manage patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma, or other intrathoracic malignancy. We are a pioneering centre in the UK for the use of endobronchial ultrasound and have run the Papworth course on Endobronchial Ultrasound, for which I have been a part of the Faculty throughout this time. I have been a member of the British Thoracic Society Specialist Advisory Groups on both Smoking Cessation and Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma.

The remaining 60 per cent of my post is in the District General Hospital setting of acute medicine and respiratory medicine at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. I am jointly responsible for the respiratory ward, developing a respiratory medicine service and taking part in acute general medicine on-call. My clinical focus here is necessarily broad, covering a wide range of respiratory medicine, but I have developed the lung cancer service to work seamlessly with the central Papworth hub and have developed a local lung nodule tracking service. We have also developed a direct access lung function service for primary care. I am also Undergraduate Clinical Tutor for Medicine for the Cambridge University Medical School at the Hinchingbrooke site.
