About me
Dr Hoare is a specialist gastrointestinal endoscopist who also has a wide range of interests in clinical gastroenterology. He approaches all conditions and symptoms with thorough and evidenced based diagnostics, followed by a holistic and open-minded approach to therapy. He has over 20 years of experience in treating irritable bowel and associated functional disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, gut infection, reflux, swallowing issues and abdominal pain.
Dr Hoare trained at Cambridge University and St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1993. He undertook a PhD as an MRC research fellow in molecular biology from 1998 until 2001. His clinical gastroenterology training included a prolonged attachment at St Mark’s Hospital where he was the first Fujinon Advanced Endoscopy Fellow, before being appointed as consultant at St Mary’s in 2006. In 2010 he was awarded a British Society of Gastroenterology Travelling Fellowship to study advanced endoscopic techniques at the National Cancer Centre in Tokyo. Dr Hoare was Head of Endoscopy for Imperial College Healthcare for 11 years and is now West London regional lead for upper gastro-intestinal cancer.
Specialist endoscopic interests include the detection and treatment of early cancer in the gut, including the management of Barrett’s oesophagus and colonic polyps. He has a specific interest in investigating and treating the small bowel by video capsule endoscopy and “balloon enteroscopy”, as well as a specialist interest in swallowing and complex oesophageal disorders.
Dr Hoare is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Academic Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College. His work on colonoscopy insertion technique was awarded the “Marsha Dreyer” research award by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in 2015. He was the senior author of the BSG National Guideline for Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding in 2019 and has published over 30 peer reviewed research papers on endoscopy and other aspects of gastroenterology.
