About me

I qualified from St Thomas' Hospital, London having trained in cardiology and coronary intervention at University Hospital Birmingham, University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (Walsgrave hospital) and the University Health Network, Toronto, Canada.
I was awarded my PhD in Medicine in 2002. During my PhD work I published extensively in the fields of nitric oxide, cardiac autonomic dysfunction and heart failure.
In 2003 I was awarded the prize of Young Investigator of the Year by the British Cardiac Society.
Subsequently, I was awarded an international interventional fellowship at the Toronto General and Mount Sinai Hospitals, Toronto.
I am currently a Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital and I sub-specialise in Coronary Intervention (stents). I have held this consultant position since 2006 and am also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London).
During my tenure I have lead the Cardiology department at Wythenshawe Hospital from 2014 to 2017, during which time I grew the department significantly.
I have expertise in all aspects of general cardiology; hypertension, heart failure and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in particular. I sub-specialises in coronary intervention encompassing coronary angiograms and all forms of complex coronary angioplasty and stenting. I am a dedicated radial operator performing procedures from the wrist as opposed to the groin which enhances safety and comfort.
I also have a super-specialist interest in angioplasty and stenting of chronically blocked heart arteries (CTOs) and in the key-hole insertion of Aortic Valve replacements (TAVI).
I am a recognised national expert in the use of imaging within heart arteries to improve the results of angioplasty & stenting (intra-coronary ultrasound (IVUS) & optical coherence tomography (OCT)) and I run a national training course in this that has trained many other UK consultants and doctors.
I am committed to improving cardiac care through research, especially in the treatment of heart attacks and I have published 40 scientific papers including some in Medicine’s top journals – e.g. New England Journal of Medicine & the Lancet.
