About me
Dr Andy Li, completed undergraduate medical training at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1993. During this time he obtained a BSc in Biochemistry funded by a Medical Research Council Award.
After general medical training he underwent specialist training in Gastroenterology on the South East Thames Regional Rotation. This included postings in prestigious London teaching hospitals including Guys and St Thomas' Hospitals and Kings College Hospital.
Several years were spent at the Rayne Institute at St Thomas' Hospital where he was able to pursue research and publish scientific articles on aspects of intestinal iron absorption that even required him to learn the fundamentals of using an electron microscope. He was able to keep up his clinical commitments which included specialist Inflammatory bowel disease clinics and the supervision of clinical drug trials on patients with Crohns Disease.
Dr Li was appointed to his current NHS consultant post at Worthing Hospital in 2004. He sits on the specialist training committee for Gastroenterology for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery and is actively involved in the training of junior doctors, medical students and nurses.
He is the founder and clinical lead for inflammatory bowel disease services for Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and lead for endoscopy training for Worthing Hospital.
He is still actively recruiting to clinical trials in Worthing Hospital that reflect his clinical interests. Dr Li is involved in multiple studies looking at genetic and therapeutic aspects of inflammatory bowel disease; safety of biologic therapies in inflammatory bowel disease; treatment of iron deficiency; endoscopic assessment of Barrett's oesophagus and new ways of diagnosing gastrointestinal malignancy. He continues to write articles which are published in peer reviewed journals.
Dr Li sees patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders. He believes a multi-disciplinary approach is important for the majority of patients with concerns around their bowel health and this might include involvement of other professionals to whom he might refer.
He is a fully accredited trainer in diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures including Gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
When he is not spending time with his very young family - Dr Li is an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer. He is a member of Worthing Astronomers and The British Astronomy Association. His planetary photographic work has been featured in magazines and journals.
