About me

Professor Ala is an experienced Consultant in Liver Disease (Hepatology) and Gastroenterology. He has developed, managed and led the loco-regional Gastroenterology and Hepatology Service and the Viral Hepatitis Programme, recognised by the British Liver Trust to be a specialist centre. He is Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University of Surrey and Institute of Liver Studies, Kings College Hospital where he is lead for Adult Genetic Metabolic Liver Programme

He qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical in 1992. Following medical posts at Westminster Hospital, Kings College and St Thomas’ Hospital, he undertook specialist Gastroenterology training at Kings College Hospital and Royal Free Hospitals London. He underwent higher Hepatology training including focusing on liver transplant at Kings College and Royal Free Hospital before undertaking a highly sought after Advanced Hepatology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, USA rare /genetic / autoimmune liver diseases, viral hepatitis and translational liver research.

He has recognised expertise in the management of complex Gastroenterology and Hepatology problems including liver disease and transplant assessment, management of chronic liver disease and treatment of viral hepatitis, rare liver and gut disease which have provided a robust clinical and research foundation on which he developed his practice as a Consultant and Clinical Academic.

He is the appointed National Institute for Health and Research Regional Lead for Hepatology (Kent, Surrey and Sussex) 2012-current, Lead for British Liver Association Rare Liver Disease 2023-current, served as member of the NICE Team in developing the 2013 Guidelines Hepatitis B management of adults and children, Clinical Reference Group Hepato-pancreatico-biliary disease (HPB) South East Coast NHS England and Hepatitis C Advisory Group. He has ongoing active collaborative links with the liver centres in the UK, Europe and USA, which has allowed him to develop and build his clinical and research portfolio, continuing to publish in high impact scientific journals.
