About me

Ajay Swami BSc MBBS MD (Anaesthesia) FCARCSI
Consultant Anaesthetist

Dr Ajay Swami is a highly experienced Consultant Anaesthetist with over 20 years at consultant level, delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centred anaesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialties.

He has particular expertise in orthopaedic anaesthesia, regularly supporting major joint surgery including knee, hip, and shoulder procedures, alongside the full scope of orthopaedic lists, including foot and ankle day-case surgery. His practice also includes hepatobiliary (HPB) and gallbladder day-case surgery, as well as gynaecology procedures, supporting high-volume, efficient theatre pathways.

Dr Swami is highly skilled in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia, enabling excellent post-operative pain control, reduced opioid use, and faster mobilisationkey to enhanced recovery and same-day discharge.

A key strength of Dr Swami's practice is his proactive approach to pre-operative assessment and optimisation. He runs dedicated pre-assessment clinics several days per week, working collaboratively with cardiology, respiratory, and haematology specialists to optimise higher-risk patients and ensure they are safe for treatment within the private hospital setting. This supports improved outcomes, reduced cancellations, and smoother surgical pathways.

He practises privately at Woodland Hospital, Kettering, and Circle Three Shires Hospital Northampton, and is recognised for his collaborative approach, reliability, and strong support of surgical teams.

Dr Swami was an NHS Consultant Anaesthetist from 2005 to 2016, where he held key leadership roles including Labour Ward Lead Anaesthetist and on-call Consultant for Intensive Care, managing complex and high-acuity patients. This experience underpins his calm, decisive approach and ability to safely manage higher-risk cases.

Alongside his clinical work, he is an established educator, teaching nationally on ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia, airway management, and human factors in patient safety. His academic contributions include publications on airway crisis management (including the SMART Anaesthesia course), perioperative monitoring, pain management, and national audit work.
