About me
I have been a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon for 20 years this year,
specialising in hip and knee problems as well as general trauma. I am a high volume surgeon which is shown to produce better outcome for patients.
In 1994 I qualified in Medicine from Glasgow University then worked in teaching hospitals in Glasgow until 1996, when I moved to London to start the surgical training rotation at University College Hospital London and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
I worked at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, then trained on the North Thames Higher Surgical Training Rotation in Trauma and Orthopaedics, becoming a Consultant at the end. I was privileged to work in a number of fantastic institutions including a return to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore again, The Royal London Hospital and several hospitals in the East of England including Southend Hospital.
As part of training, we have an opportunity to travel to other hospitals worldwide to gain as wide a range of experience and bring new techniques back to the UK. Many orthopaedic developments have originated in the UK, so trainee Consultants are welcomed worldwide by the community. I won a fellowship sponsored by the Australian Orthopaedic Association at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia where I worked in the state regional Trauma Centre, furthering my experience in trauma, hip and knee surgery.
I moved to Essex (where my wife originates) early in my training and was appointed as a Consultant at Southend Hospital when I finished. As a water and wind sport enthusiast it offered a happy combination of professional and personal interests as well as pleasing my wife immensely.
I have been instrumental in developing services in the area and introducing or developing techniques such as minimally invasive ligament repairs and reconstruction, joint replacements in younger patients, hip resurfacing, customised knee replacements and robotic assisted knee replacement. I spend much of my time in the NHS treating people with problematic joint replacements needing further treatment or particularly challenging problems which make first operations technically challenging.
I led the local NHS Department as Clinical Lead during the Covid pandemic and Chair the Medical Advisory Committee at the local Spire Wellesley Hospital where I base my private practice.
