About me

I have been a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon since 1980 and worked in one of the busiest trauma units in the UK. One of my interests is facial trauma surgery having written a textbook on diagnosis and treatment of facial fractures for the non specialist which is standard reference in most Accident and Emergency Departments in the UK. I am one of the pioneers in the use of the Inion biodegradable plating system in the treatment of facial fractures. I have over 106 publications in peer reviewed journals on topics that include dental implants, temporomandibular joint disease, facial trauma, salivary gland pathology, dentoalveolar surgery, Medico-legal report writing, oral medicine and oral cancer as well as NHS organisation. I was one of the first Clinical Directors in the NHS and have been President and Chair of various organisations which includes the Wirral Hospital NHS Trust Medical Board. I have taught both under and post-graduates researched and lectured extensively in the UK and abroad being awarded honorary Professorships in Universities in Syria, Libya and Nepal while undertaking a busy NHS and private practice. I am a founder member of the Expert Witness Institute and have considerable experience in medico-legal report writing for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, Coroner, criminal cases, claimant, defence and as a single joint expert in negligence cases. I was an advisor until 2012 for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow; a Trustee of the Wirral Postgraduate Centre until 2019; Up until 2012 I ran a local CPD programme that satisfies the General Dental Council “life long learning programme” for Dental Surgeons and was until 2012 Secretary of West Lancashire, West Cheshire, North Wales and Isle of Man Branch of the British Dental Association. I have been awarded in 2014 a Certificate of Merit by the British Dental Association for contribution to the profession Nationally and Internationally. I worked for several years as a visiting Consultant to Liverpool Prison I was awarded a certificate by the publishers of Nature in 2013 as one of my articles was in the top 10 sited in the world. I am married with 2 girls and enjoy playing tennis, bridge and clay pigeon shooting.
