About me
After having obtained my Master's degree in Psychology at Amsterdam University, I worked for several years in the Psychiatric Department of the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, now called the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, a London teaching hospital. As the department dealt with complex cases referred from all over the UK, it gave me the necessary competence and experience to set up subsequently in private practice which suited my family circumstances at the time. I have now been in private practice for over 30 years. Recent advances in IT have made it possible to also offer e-counselling and therapy via Skype and Zoom to people who live too far away to come and see me in my consulting room in Pinner, North-West London. Since the first lockdown I have seen all my clients on line but will be offering to see those clients in person who prefer that, once the figures for Covid and flu have gone down sufficiently to make if feel safe. I welcome also applications from clients who live abroad.
My experience covers a whole range of issues such as anxiety, bereavement and loss, cultural issues, depression, eating disorders, health-related issues, identity problems, obsessive tendencies, relationships, self-esteem, any kind of stress, trauma and its transgenerational effects as well as work-related issues. My clientle consists of adults and groups of adults.
My special interest is the transgenerational effects of trauma, particularly in relation to the Holocaust. I have facilitated second generation groups for adult children of Holocaust survivors and refugees from Nazi-persecution in London for over 30 years and have also facilitated frequently child survivor and second generation groups in Berlin and Prague. I have presented many papers in the UK, the Czech Republic and Germany and am a Patron of the Prague-based Rafael Institute, the first trauma training and treatment institute in Central and Eastern Europe.
I offer short-term individual therapy, using CBT and solution-focused techniques, as well as longer term therapy following psychodynamic and other treatment models: rather than using a single approach I use what I believe will best suit the client's needs. In view of the fact that I have seen over the years a large number of clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and with many different issues, I seem to be able to apply the insights gained to the best advantage of my clients.
I was born and grew up in Holland and came to the UK in 1972.
