About me

My expertise is in high blood pressure and related problems such as resistant hypertension, side effects on drugs, difficult to control blood pressure and lifestyle ways of lowering blood pressure.

I trained as a kidney specialist and then became interested in high blood pressure and helped to develop many of the new drugs that came in in the 1980s which are now the drugs that we use for treating high blood pressure. At the same time we did many studies on lifestyle advice, particularly looking at how to reduce salt, increase fruit and vegetable consumption and other aspects of trying to get blood pressure down both in those with high and upper-range of normal blood pressure.

I set up and ran one of the biggest blood pressure units in the UK at St Georges Hospital. From this I have a very large practical experience of investigating and managing all aspects of high blood pressure. I now work at Barts & The London Hospital.

Over 15 years ago I set up a charity for patients with high blood pressure, the Blood Pressure Association (now known as Blood Pressure UK http://www.bloodpressureuk.org) which has been very successful in getting better information about blood pressure to individuals, why they should be treated, how they should be treated and what side effects may be expected form their drugs. The charity has also campaigned for greater awareness of the importance of blood pressure and has won several awards.

I was also involved in founding the British Hypertension Society and subsequently became President of the society. I also Chair action groups on salt and sugar (Consensus Action on Salt and Health ((CASH)) http://www.actiononsalt.org.uk/ and Action on Sugar http://www.actiononsugar.org/), both in the UK and worldwide which are ensuring that salt intake is gradually reduced as well as plans to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes are put into place.
