About me

I offer helpful, practical conversations for adults trying to make sense of feelings of anxiety, depression, PTSD, problems at home and work etc.

I have worked as a Clinical Psychologist for 40 years. As well as working in traditional settings such as hospitals, GP surgeries and mental health centres, I have also undertaken health education projects, worked within several companies (eg I ran an employee assistance programme for one company, now De La Rue, for over 20 years), a University Health Centre, with a Police Force for 14 years, and with a number of self-help groups.

Throughout I have developed an interest in the words and ideas we all tend to use in everyday language to describe psychological experience and psychological problems. Some of these words and ideas regard problems as things that we 'suffer from’ or 'have' and tend to suggest that our problems happen to us and are caused by all sorts of influences that we have little control over.

An alternative is to see ourselves as active agents who have simply been doing our best to make sense of our situation and the challenges we face. This is usually an important focus for the discussions I have with clients. My approach is also practical. It is less concerned with the history of the psychological difficulties and more with how they might be resolved.

Two of my daughters are qualified clinical and neuropsychologists.
