About me

Martyn has been a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Urologist at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow since 2007. He works predominantly in paediatric urology but continues to cover general paediatric surgery and paediatric renal transplant during on call. He is one of the senior paediatric urologists in Scotland and provides support to the Scottish network. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, Medical School and has been the training programme director for the Scottish paediatric surgical training consortium for the past 6 years.

Martyn has expertise in congenital abnormalities of the uro-genital tract and extensive experience in managing children with urinary tract infections and bladder dysfunction (including wetting and difficulties passing urine). He also provides more routine surgical care for the general surgery of childhood (including hernias / hydroceles, foreskin problems, penile torque, testicle problems). He has extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery ('key-hole�) and is the Paediatric Urologist introducing Robotic Assisted Surgery to Scotland.

Mr Martyn Flett qualified from The University of Aberdeen with his basic medical qualification and an additional 1st Class Honours BSc in Medical Science in 1995. Following basic surgical training around Scotland he undertook higher training in Paediatric Surgery in Glasgow and Newcastle. In his final training years he undertook a Senior Fellowship in Paediatric Urology at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London before this current consultant appointment in Glasgow.

Martyn teaches undergraduate medical students, core and higher surgical trainees as well as being Faculty on surgical courses around the UK. He is an examiner and question writer for the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examination in Paediatric Surgery and a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers in Edinburgh. He is a member of the British Association of Paediatric Urologists and the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons. He has published in peer review journals and textbooks in subjects related to paediatric surgery. He has an ongoing interest in information technology within healthcare and has developed a number of computer systems and apps that are used by at the Glasgow Children's hospital.

He is happy to see children from 3 to 16 years to assess and advise at the Ross Hall, Braehead outpatient unit. Where appropriate surgery may be offered at Ross Hall Hospital.
