About me

I am a Consultant with sub-speciality training in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus; I did my training at Great Ormond Street hospital, where I completed two fellowships, one in 1988 and another in 2000.

I practised in South America ( Colombia) for 10 years, where I worked at a University Hospital and I was the head of the department. I acquired broad experience in the management of a broad spectrum of eye diseases in children, including screening and management of retinopathy of prematurity, management of cataracts in children, paediatric glaucoma, orbital eye diseases, correction of refractive errors, allergic eye disease, management of keratoconus which included corneal transplant in children, and diagnosis of management of eye diseases associated with systemic diseases. I also acquired broad experience in the management of retinoblastoma, a malignant tumour that can developing babies. I also developed the training program for Paediatric ophthalmology, which included trainees from three university hospitals in Bogotá.

I have been a Consultant for 13 years at St Thomas' Hospital in London, one of the largest and most prestigious University hospitals in I am the lead clinician for the Paediatric Ophthalmology Department, and I am fully involved with the training of doctors who want to become Paediatric Ophthalmologists.
I coordinate the teaching sessions of the whole Ophthalmology department, and I am the College Tutor for the trainees at St Thomas'.
Additionally, I am very involved with the International Council of Ophthalmology, a non profit worldwide organisation that aims to improve the standards of eye care and training throughout the world. UK.

Areas of interest

Medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases in children: Refractive errors (hypermetropia, myopia, astigmatism, amblyopia treatment; management of strabismus in children and adults (squints), including adjustable sutures. Surgical management of droopy eyelids in children (ptosis); allergic eye disease in children; treatment of uveitis in children such as that associated to Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis; Medical and surgical treatment of Orbital disorders in children; Cataract surgery in children with and without intraocular lens implant depending on the case; external disorders; Paediatric Glaucoma; Lacrimal system disorders such as congenital dacryostenosis.
Screening and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.
