About me

Zahir Soonawalla is a Consultant hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon who has over 15 years experience in this field. He is the Clinical Lead for the gallstone service at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and has organised the provision of NHS services at Oxford for patients with gallstone disease. During this time, he improved the provision of gall bladder surgery at Oxford, such that Oxford now has one of the highest rates of successful day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the UK.

The Oxford Gallstone Clinic was founded by Zahir Soonawalla, Lead Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The clinic delivers high-quality and personalised care for the management of gallstones and related complications. The clinic, based at the Nuffield Manor Hospital, strives to provide you with clear information and rapid advice. Diagnostic tests and surgery are carried out at the Nuffield Manor Hospital, one of the most modern and technologically advanced hospitals in the UK. Mr. Soonawalla has a special interest in complications of gall bladder surgery, their causes and management, and has published papers on this field.

Zahir also chairs the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Cancer Services at Oxford, and leads the Oxford Neuroendocrine Centre of Excellence. In addition to clinical work, he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer with the University of Oxford, and takes part in research and teaching.
